is judaism monotheistic

[1] See Hermann Cohen, Religion of Reason out of the Sources of Judaism, translated by Simon Kaplan (Atlanta: Scholars Press, 1995), 35-49.Cohen here is summarizing a line of thought that goes back at least as far as the middle ages. Those who follow a monotheistic religion believe in the existence of a single god. One of many places in which Judaism proclaims its monotheism is in its most famous prayer, the Shema, which we recite twice every day. Reprinted with permission from The JPS Torah Commentary: Deuteronomy, published by the Jewish Publication Society.. Deuteronomy 4:32-40 touches upon the part played by Moses in the development of monotheism in Israel. No, no at all. The argument struck me as peculiar. Our high-school Bible teacher once said proudly that, by begetting monotheistic faith, Judaism has, more than any other religion in history, enabled the human race to make progress. In contrast, some believe in multiple gods and these are known as polytheistic religions. For the sake of clarity it is important that we define the terminology that is used in discussing this issue. Judaism is the anchor of the Jewish faith. Most know that Judaism dates back to the time of the Old Testament, which dates back to at least 4,000 to 5,000 years, based on geological evidence from the Great Flood. This includes many of the well-known faiths including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The answer is yes. The students in the class were secular, nor was the Bible teacher religiously observant – he was secular and a socialist, a member of the left-wing Hashomer Hatzair movement. Both Christianity and Islam are off shoots of Judaism, but the Jewish religion was there first. As is written in the Sh’ma, which is considered the most important prayer in Judaism, this God is omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all knowing) and omnipresent (ever present). And if you learned some Hebrew grammar, those ‘elohim’ words for God wouldn’t disturb you - because the noun and verb must agree, right? It’s likely much older than that, though. Judaism is one of the oldest monotheistic religions and was founded over 3500 years ago in the Middle East. Sometimes referred to as the Jewish faith, stands as the oldest monotheistic religion, i.e., the belief in one God.
